It’s slightly more than 24 hrs after I picked up my iPhone but I haven’t gotten to play around with it much. The iPhone does look sleek with it’s high gloss finish. Unless you don’t mind fingerprints all over, I got a leather case to slip it into. There is already a slew of new touchscreen phones hitting the market in response to Apple’s iPhone. Amongst them are:
- BlackBerry Storm (end 2008)
- HTC Touch Daimond (in stock)
- HTC Dream G1 (end 2008)
In comparison, all four phone uses different OS. My late Sony Ericsson P1i was on the Symbian UI3. The iPhone is obviously running on a proprietary OS developed by Apple. BlackBerry on it’s reliable RIM OS, The HTC Touch Diamond on a beautiful but buggy Windows Mobile platform.
The HTC Dream G1 will be an interesting one to watch as it will run on the much touted Android OS. What this actually means is the capabilities of the G1 is expected to be quite expansive due to it’s open source nature. If you love the Firefox and Flock browsers over Internet Explorer and the Beta Chrome, you will know what I mean. There is a downside t it however, being open source also means your local service provider is able to remove, block or lock certain features of the Android based phone.
I for one will be wary of v1.0 of any new OS, in this case the Android… Remember Windows CE? I have never been a fan of Windows based phones after my disappointing Motorola MPx200 so the HTC Touch Diamond wasn’t an option to replace my P1i. It was pretty much down to the BlackBerry Storm or the iPhone. There were pro and cons of course.
iPhone pros:
- 16 GB of storage on board
- Interface with iTunes (my default MP3 player)
- Synchronises via iTunes (my default MP3 player)
- Same 30-pin docking port as my iPod Classic
- Apple App Store (i.e. Facebook, Bloomberg, NY TImes and WordPress for iPhone)
- Cost just $8 after (trade-in of SE P1i)
- Wifi
iPhone cons:
- Can’t copy and paste
- SMS is a nightmare
- 2 M.P. camera without flash
- No expandable memory slot
BlackBerry Storm pros:
- Secure enterprise solution with PushMail
- High connectivity
- RIM’s reliable UI design
- Slightly larger screen
BlackBerry Storm cons:
- No Wifi
- Not yet released
- Succumb to PushMail again (slave to the device)
- Need for additional software to synchronise
For $8, i decided to pick up the iPhone and not fail back into the trap of being a slave to emails and work again. Don’t get me wrong for you can have your mails pushed to you on the iPhone too. Unlike the iPhone, BlackBerry and RIM solely exists because of their PushMail features and technology. Take that away and they would be just another mobile phone manufacturer.
If it wasn’t for all the dropped calls on my P1i, I would be sitting on the fence still. The one real plus for the Storm though is it’s enhanced connectivity. My last BlackBerry was the 7100g. I remembering cursing at RIM and Microsoft for not including the MSN Messenger on the device.
The new Storm will have MSN, AOL and ICQ including the Yahoo, GoogleTalk and BB Messengers we are familiar with. Truly, the BlackBerry Storm is the device to go for if staying connected is the priority for you. Should the G1 had been on the market, I would have check that one out too. For me, WordPress for iPhone was the deciding factor.
P/S: I just bought 5 new domains today…

iPhone 3G has overtaken the lead in cellular phone sales, dropping the Motorola RAZR out of the top slot for the first time in almost 10 years. The shift would indicate that American consumers are looking for a phone that offers more features than just a handset for making phone calls. The research firm NPD Group recently, in an Engadget report, stated that the recent massive advertising campaign hasn’t hurt Apple either, even if cell phone sales have actually dropped 15 percent since Christmas 2007. Apple still has to be happy with their position as the trendsetter in gadget style and taste. Eventually, America’s cell phone choices will seem far more full featured than what the Asian market already has access to. However, when it comes to short term payday cash loans, America’s choices are broad. The economic crunch that is on combined with the looming Christmas season will force some people will to look for a little help between paydays. If taken with care and responsibility, payday cash can be a useful tool, like an iPhone.
