Since the end of 2007, I have installed and set this blog up as for DoFollow to link back to folks who leave comments here. I felt it was a way of saying thank you to folks who read my blog and leave some feedback on my posts. Unfortunately, there were also a number of human comment spammers who found the motivation of going through the hassle of leaving spam comments on my blog even though I had the Cryptographp plugin installed. Obviously, that plugin was to combat comment spam. Though it managed to stop spam bots in their tracks, it doesn’t really work well against human comment spammers.
On the prowl once again for a more advanced DoFollow plugin, I chanced on Lucia’s Link Love (LLL) plugin after visiting Andy Bread’s blog. What separates the LLL plugin from the ones available today is the ability to turn on the DoFollow feature only after your commenter has left a number of comments. So for human comment spammers who visit your blog once to leave a comment and never to return, this plugin leave the NoFollow attribute on. Another feature that this plugin adds is the ability to block SEO crazed comment spammers. One of the options in the plugin allow you to block sites with too many characters like ‘best viagra pills at the lowest price online delivered to your doorstep’. Catching the drift?
I have installed the LLL plugin on this blog and already noticed the difference. One way to tell if links on your blog or any webpages are DoFollow or NoFollow is by the Firefox SearchStatus addon. Right-click on the SearchStatus icon and check on the ‘Highlight NoFollow Links’ selection. All NoFollow links will be highlighted in a pink box as shown. You can get the SearchStaus addon here.
Be careful not to set your minimum comment count too high. You want to discourage human comment spammer and not your readers or genuine commenter from leaving comments. I believe a general number of 2 - 3 minimum comments before DoFollow is enabled on their links is an acceptable figure. Try out this new plugin and feel free to leave your feedback on your thoughts.

Interesting…
“Another feature that this plugin adds is the ability to block SEO crazed comment spammers.”
Of course I blog… to relieve stress from Job… And i figure if I am working and I choose to comment on on a blog site… I might as well link back to my Job… I mean, I am working , am I not?
I realize that, that may appear to be spamming but I think that in my case, it is balance.
I am working and reading blogs… A little for me and a little for my Job, seems fair, don’t you think?
If a person promotes their own personal business is that wrong?
Besides, you never know, you might be in the market for a home one and need a good deal.
Anyway, in a previous blog you stated, “On the rare attempts where I managed to get the entire snail out of it’s shell, the gooey part reminded my of earthworms…”
How do you eat that? Ugh!

Nick,
Thanks for dropping in.
Yes, leaving a comment and deciding where you want to link it back to is your decision and there is nothing wrong with it. The question is how will the weblog owner know we are not spamming? Some will choose to delete our comments if they doubt the true intention.
Having such a plugin allows the weblog owner better control and if I could put it in my own words, feel safe to approve any valid comment like yours here without having to think twice since a minimum number of comments need to meet obtain before the ‘DoFollow’ attribute is turned on. When that happens, spiders start crawling back to you. It’s a win win for both parties I believe.
Someone else might find your site useful but not me for the time being though since I’m residing in Singapore.
As for the snails… figured if I’m in a foreign country, might as well experience the local lifestyle in full flavour…as for earthworms… I tried that while I was in the military on a jungle survival course and trust when I say that it’s not the worst thing compared to some other… I will not describe them here…

How many times user awarded with a link juice by using LLL ? Is it setable or has default value ?

Nicholas
I can’t recall if there is a default value but you can definitely set the number of comments required on the ‘Settings’ page before ‘DoFollow’ is turned on.

Very interesting…that’s one smart plugin - it allows you to give back to your commenters who truly show an interest and also manages to keep out the spammers. I like that.
