My Canon EOS 40D

Most if not all of the photos on this blog was previously taken using either my 6MP Casio Exlim EX-S600 compact digital camera or my Sony Ericsson P1i which spots a 3.2MP camera on board. The Casio was my first digital camera and I have been using it on various occasions for the past 3 years. It has definitely seen better days and has been succeeded by newer models from one of the best compact digital camera manufacturers.

It was perhaps last year that I contemplated upgrading from a compact camera to something that will allow me more flexibility and take better photos. I will consider myself at most an amateur photographer given my less than adequate knowledge. Yet, on many occasions, I realise the limitations of compact cameras.

I’ve done a fair bit of research on my next ‘upgrade’. The initial thought was to get my hands on a hybrid by Nikon. The P5100 was a cross between a compact camera given it’s small form factor and lightweight. It also had optional attachments to bring the user a tad closer to what an SLR could deliver. Taking into consideration the price for the complete set and flexibility, I decided to dump the idea.

Over the past weeks, I have been online reading reviews on the Canon EOS 1000D, EOS 450D and the Nikon D60. On my last trip to Kuala Lumpur, I met someone who had a similar interest in SLRs. She was using the EOS 350D and her partner had the EOS 400D. It didn’t take much to sway me from being a die-hard Nikon fan to a more ‘proconsumer’ Canon option.

Somehow, instead of settling for the entry-level EOS 450D which was launch in April 2008, I dug deeper into my pocket to grab the semi-pro full-frame Canon EOS 40D. Though the latest model in it’s class, the EOS 40D was released in July 2007 and takes photos up to 10MP. In comparison, the newer EOS 450D is able to take pictures up to 12MP. Nevertheless, 10MP will be sufficient for printing a photo on A3 size paper. I doubt I will be missing an additional 2MP.
