Seventh week in Hanoi

There’s nothing spectacular happening in this part of the world this week or at least from what I know. A launch event by one of our partners last evening did give me a chance to catch up with a couple of colleagues. Sadly, that was the most fun I had this week. Apart from deadlines that are not met, remotely contacting and managing my clients, the weather is perhaps the only interesting thing here in Hanoi.

I was expecting a dry spell and scorching sun. Strangely, there’s been more rain than anything else. Not that it’s out of the ordinary or anything but that’s how interesting the week has been for me. If you are not catching the drift here then don’t bother.

CLMS e-programme Portfolio 2007-2

I wrote to the University of Leicester enquiring on their MSc programmes on Sunday and have gotten a response. They have also put me in contact with the local representative in Singapore. After looking around and doing some research, the Centre for Labour Market Studies at Leicester was the most obvious choice for me in the end. There are 4 intakes annually and the upcoming intake is in July 2008. Registrations have already begun. Unfortunately, I will have wait till the next intake since I will still be in Hanoi in July. The additional incentives I’m expecting to receive sometime in July will come in handy to offset the other course fees. Unless there are delays of course…

At GBP6,450 for the 2 year MSc programme, I believe it should be manageable. Most MBAs require twice the investment amount anyway. Well, it will be great if the boss offers a sponsorship. Else, below are just some of the things I feel I have put off for too long. No matter, I will need to prioritise and plan my schedule carefully or I will run the risk of attempting to accomplish too many things at the same time. After some thought, I think I will most probably do the following:

  • SSI Open Water Dive in August ‘08
  • MSc programme at University of Leicester in September ‘08
  • Motorcar Class 3 September ‘08

At the current moment, I’m undecided on which programme to pursue at CLMS. I have narrowed the list down to between:

  • MSc in HRD and Performance Management
  • MSc in Skills and Performance.

I’m hoping a meeting with their local representative will give me more clarity and help me in the decision making process. For those who are interested, click here to download the CLMS e-programme Portfolio.

There is also the surgery on my ankle so the above is tentative. I’ve been advised by CT and JP to go for it. Even GH who previously cautioned me that surgery should be the last resort now feels differently. It’s a minor operation on the ligaments to begin with. I’m supposed to be able to go for my runs again after that. Nevertheless, I will need to speak with the surgeon again on my next medical appointment.

Unless I postpone the surgery till later this year, I will pretty much blow any hopes of doing my open water dive this season and completing my driving instruction. Speaking of which, I passed my Basic Theory Test and Final Theory Test on my first attempt. The computerised system these days make it much easier. My basic took me like 4 minutes and my final took me about 15 minutes. I’m kind of proud about it honestly.

Operation or not, I do not wish to be hobbling on crutches during Christmas. So much to do and so little time… Next ICT in January ‘09… What timing…
