Too close for comfort leh
I woke up late again today. You know how is it like to go out late on Sunday and reaching home even later and realising that you have stuff to prepare for the next day? If Santa asked me for a wish, I’d wished that there will only be one day in a week. Sunday! Then we all live on thin air!
Anyway, I got out of the house at 08:15 today. 30 minutes later then usual. With 3 packs of ‘New & Improved’ Intense 3-in-1 Nescafe Coffee Mix, 1 party pack of Kit Kat, Mars and Toblerone each not forgetting my IBM (Oops. . Leveno now), I wasn’t in the best of moods. With a growling tummy and half my brains left on the pillow, I decided I catch a cab to the office instead. First thought that ran across my mind…. “no comfort! no city!”. It’s Dec 17th. The day when ComfortDelGro, CityCab and Yellow-Top cab fare hikes go into force and cab fare meters charge you more when you hop on and jump twice as fast giving you a nothing more than a heart arrest each time you see the digits jump.
I must have been damn bloody heng today. First cab I saw was SMRT. I didn’t like SMRT cabs previously as more often than not, you kena the old Nissan Cedric ones. Sometimes I wonder if those drivers will die of lung cancer earlier. Broken springs in the passenger seats coupled with stuffy air-conditioning, I swear I can smell the exhaust in the cabin. Like I said, I was lucky today lah. I kena the newer Toyota Crown one.
Indian driver very friendly too. Told him Armenian Street and he asked “where huh?”. Told him “uncle, ROM there…” and he said “oh… there… I was there 13 years ago… I know that place… I know, I know…”. To my surprise, traffic was very smooth on the expressway this morning. No jam, no comfort…
I meant, I hardly saw a ComfortDelGro or CityCab taxi along the way. Traffic was a real breeze man. Guess what? A journey that usually takes me an hour or so took me just about 30 minutes. So, I still got to the office early! Man I was the unlucky one who had the struggle with the locks (part of the reason why I’m always 15 minutes late).
Strange man. Where did all the blue and yellow cabs go? Did the drivers figured somehow that Singaporeans will avoid taking their cabs as much as possible starting today that they decided to take the day off? Did that somehow contribute to the smooth traffic this morning? The Comfort cab I took yesterday was the last. The driver sure seemed like he was in a hurry. travelling at 110KM/h, the nutcase actually tail-gated the whole journey. All the driver of the car in the front had to do was to tap on the brakes and BAM! Can forget about watching Alvin and the Chipmunks liao… I had a similar experience earlier last week with another blue cab. Maybe they know that business will be affected huh?
Or was the new ERP gantry that appeared out of nowhere the real reason? I haven’t been taking cabs to work recently I guess. When I saw the new ERP gantry this morning, the dark side of my mind went… “wa lau! like that also can ah?!? Next time every slip road leading to/off every expressway will have another one of those AGRGs (Automated Government Revenue Generators). By then how?”. With compliments from Singapore LOR…
